Explanation
ข้างๆ is an everyday expression built from ข้าง (“side”) with repetition. It refers to a position immediately beside or very close to someone or something. It may also be written ข้าง ๆ with a space before the repetition mark. A reference point can follow it, as in ข้างๆ ฉัน (“next to me”). When that reference point is obvious, it can be omitted. After a noun, as in ร้านข้างๆ, it identifies the nearby or next-door one. Although it often suggests a side-by-side position, it can also mean “right nearby” without requiring exact alignment.
Usage
Commonly used when asking someone to sit beside you, explaining that a store or building is next to another place, or identifying a neighboring person, house, room, or business. It is natural in both everyday conversation and general writing.
Caution
Use ใกล้ when you only mean “near” without suggesting an adjacent position. ข้างๆ carries a stronger side-by-side or next-door image. It does not specify which side; use ข้างซ้าย or ข้างขวา when the distinction between left and right matters.
