Explanation

The central idea of ใกล้ is that the gap between two things is small. Its opposite is ไกล, “far.” For physical distance, common patterns include อยู่ใกล้ followed by a place or person (“be near”) and ใกล้กัน (“be close to each other”). The reference noun can follow ใกล้ directly. The same idea extends to time and events. ใกล้เข้ามา describes a date or deadline drawing near, while ใกล้จะ followed by a verb means that something is about to happen. It is a neutral, very common word used in both everyday conversation and general writing.

Usage

It is commonly used to describe the locations of homes, stations, shops, and other places, as well as when giving directions or arranging a meeting. It also appears frequently when exams or deadlines are approaching and when events such as arrival, rain, or completion are imminent.

Caution

In the pattern ใกล้ followed by a noun, the noun directly marks the reference point; no additional linking word is required. ใกล้จะ followed by a verb suggests that the event is imminent. For an ordinary future plan, จะ plus a verb may be more appropriate, while อีกไม่นาน is often better for the less immediate sense of “before long.”
