Explanation
เถอะ normally follows a verb phrase. With กัน, as in ไปกันเถอะ, it clearly proposes a shared action: “let’s go.” Without กัน, as in กินเถอะ, it often encourages the listener to act: “go ahead and eat.” It also occurs in common set expressions such as เอาเถอะ (“all right then” or “anyway”) and ช่างมันเถอะ (“never mind” or “let it go”), which bring a matter to a close.
Usage
It is common in everyday conversation when inviting friends or family to do something together, encouraging someone to eat, rest, leave, or take another action, and telling someone to stop, as in พอเถอะ (“that's enough”).
Caution
เถอะ is not inherently polite. กันเถอะ usually means “let's do it together,” while a verb followed directly by เถอะ may instead urge the listener to act. With superiors or in formal situations, add appropriate politeness such as ครับ or ค่ะ, or choose a more respectful expression. Tone can also make it sound insistent or forceful.
