Explanation

The central idea of ตรง is that something does not deviate from a line, point, standard, or target. A shape that does not deviate is “straight”; movement that does not change course goes “straight ahead”; a time with no deviation is “exactly” on the hour; and two pieces of information with no discrepancy “match.” In speech, avoiding detours or evasive wording gives the meaning “frankly” or “directly.” Common patterns include ตรงไป “go straight,” พูดตรงๆ “speak frankly,” ตรงเวลา “on time,” ตรงกับ “match,” ตรงกัน “agree with each other,” and ตรงนี้ “here/this spot.” When marking a location, ตรง draws attention to a particular spot or part. ตรงนี้ can refer not only to a physical place but also to a point in a text or discussion.

Usage

It is common in directions, descriptions of posture and shape, exact appointment times, discussions of punctuality, and comparisons of information or requirements. It is also frequently used when speaking frankly or pointing out a particular place, body part, or section of a text.

Caution

Do not memorize ตรง only as “straight,” since that will not explain expressions such as ตรงเวลา “on time” or ตรงกับ “match.” พูดตรง means to speak directly; it does not necessarily mean that what is said is correct. Direct speech can sound harsh, so speakers may soften it with an introduction such as พูดตรงๆ นะ, “Let me be frank.” ตรงโต๊ะ normally means “at/by the table,” not specifically “on the table.” Use บนโต๊ะ for “on the table” and ใต้โต๊ะ for “under the table.”
