ทำไม is the standard everyday question word for asking the reason or cause of something. It can also stand alone as ทำไม? meaning “Why?” Common patterns include ทำไม followed by a clause, ทำไมถึง followed by a verb, and ทำไมต้อง followed by a verb. The last pattern specifically questions why something is necessary or required. ทำไมไม่ followed by a verb can ask “Why don't you...?” but it may also work as a suggestion. For example, ทำไมไม่ลองดู? often means “Why not give it a try?” Answers commonly begin with เพราะ…, meaning “because….”
Usage
It is used throughout everyday conversation to ask about people's actions, choices, feelings, and the causes of events. It is also common as a stand-alone reaction to surprising information or in complaints such as ทำไมต้องเป็นฉัน? “Why does it have to be me?” The expression แล้วจะทำไม is used when responding defiantly, especially during an argument.
Caution
Tone matters: ทำไม can sound like a neutral request for information or an accusation. With superiors or in sensitive situations, use polite particles and a softer phrasing. แล้วจะทำไม is often confrontational and should not be used as an ordinary polite question.
