Explanation
ขอบคุณ is the most basic Thai expression of gratitude. It can stand alone as “thank you” or function as a verb meaning “to thank.” For a polite expression, male speakers commonly say ขอบคุณครับ and female speakers say ขอบคุณค่ะ. Adding มาก, as in ขอบคุณมาก, strengthens the gratitude and means “thank you very much.” Use ขอบคุณสำหรับ before a noun to identify what you are thankful for. Use ขอบคุณที่ before a clause describing someone’s action. ขอขอบคุณ is a more formal form often heard in speeches, announcements, and professional writing.
Usage
It is used when receiving a gift, help, information, advice, a compliment, or a service. It is appropriate in everyday conversation as well as in shops, workplaces, and interactions with people you have just met.
Caution
In situations requiring politeness, it is natural to add ครับ or ค่ะ according to the speaker. ขอบคุณ expresses gratitude, not an apology; use ขอโทษ when you need to say “sorry.”
