คง

Explanation

In everyday speech, คง is most useful as “probably” or “I suppose.” It usually comes after the subject and before the verb or adjective, as in เขาคงมา, “He’ll probably come,” or คุณคงรู้แล้ว, “You probably already know.” คงจะ is also common and makes the guess sound a little more explicitly tentative. In written, business, or explanatory language, คง is also tied to the idea of stability: keeping something unchanged, remaining, or being constant. Useful chunks are คงไว้ “keep/preserve,” คงอยู่ “remain/continue to exist,” ยังคง “still/continue to,” and คงที่ “constant/stable.”

Usage

In conversation, it is common when guessing about someone’s condition, predicting what will happen, or suggesting a likely reason. In writing, news, and business contexts, it is used for keeping quality or prices, describing remaining problems or institutions, and saying that values or conditions are stable.

Caution

คง is not a firm certainty when used for guessing. Use แน่นอน for something definite, and อาจ or อาจจะ for a weaker “may/might.” Also, ยังคง can sound somewhat formal, so in casual speech ยัง...อยู่ is often more natural.
