กำลัง...อยู่

Explanation

The basic pattern is “subject + กำลัง + verb phrase + อยู่.” The material between กำลัง and อยู่ normally includes the complete verb phrase, including its object. For example: เขา + กำลัง + กินข้าว + อยู่ → เขากำลังกินข้าวอยู่ (“He/She is eating right now.”) The construction can describe either an action happening at that moment or an activity continuing through the current period, such as studying Thai or looking for a new home. In conversation, either กำลัง or อยู่ may be omitted when the progressive meaning is already clear.

Usage

It is common in calls and chats when asking what someone is doing or describing an activity currently underway. A particularly useful everyday pattern is กำลังทำอะไรอยู่? (“What are you doing right now?”).

Caution

The complete verb phrase normally goes between กำลัง and อยู่. For “be eating a meal,” say กำลังกินข้าวอยู่, not กำลังกินอยู่ข้าว. Do not confuse this construction with กำลังจะ + verb, which means “be about to do” and refers to the near future. กำลัง...อยู่ describes something already in progress. It is also generally unsuitable for permanent characteristics or universal facts.
