ก่อน

Explanation

The core idea of ก่อน is being earlier in time or order. Before a phrase, it means “before ...”; after a verb, it means doing that action first. In conversation, it often softens a statement by making it sound temporary: do this first, decide the rest later.

Usage

This is a very common everyday word. It appears when talking about schedules, instructions, waiting, leaving before someone else, or postponing a decision. Expressions like ไปก่อนนะ, รอก่อน, ดูก่อน, คิดก่อน, and แค่นี้ก่อน are especially useful.

Caution

ก่อน is mainly for time and order, not physical location. For “in front of” a place or object, use หน้า or ข้างหน้า instead.
